Athletes prepare for 2012 Summer Paralympics at the Paralympic Fitness Centre

Monday, August 27, 2012

London, England — As Paralympians ready for the Games which are set to open later this week, they have access to a world class fitness center inside the Paralympic Village which is designed to maximise their pre-Game preparations.

According to volunteers staffing the center, instead of being a single large room, as in Beijing, the building has numerous rooms. It, along with the adjacent Village Services Centre, is designed to be converted into a school after the games conclude. Rooms have been structured as a gym, an auditorium, and science laboratories.

Gym equipment is supplied by Technogym, an Italian firm that has supplied gym equipment for the Olympics since 2000. Equipment has been provided not just for for the Fitness Centre, but for gyms at all the Olympic venues. The newest equipment is oriented toward maximum flexibility, allowing athletes to exercise the particular muscles that they most require for their sport.

In addition to the equipment, the Fitness Centre also provides instructors trained in the use of the equipment, the likes of which athletes from many countries have never seen before. There are also a number of instructors available to provide motivational training.

Burris sworn in as US Senator for Illinois

Friday, January 16, 2009

American politician Roland Burris of the United States Democratic Party was sworn in Thursday as US president-elect Barack Obama’s replacement in the United States Senate.

Burris was initially not admitted into the Senate, even though Governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich appointed him to the position, due to allegations that the governor tried to sell the seat. Blagojevich was arrested and has been impeached for the alleged crime. Burris was denied his position on January 6 by other Democratic members of the Congress because his appointment papers were not signed by Jesse White, the Illinois Secretary of State, who had refused to sign his name due to the charges faced by Blagojevich.

Burris was officially sworn in by United States Vice President Dick Cheney with no objections from other members of the Congress. Harry Reid, the senior Democratic senator from Nevada and majority leader, who had led the opposition to Burris being appointed, welcomed him into the Senate.

“On behalf of all senators, Democrats and Republicans, we welcome you as a colleague and a friend,” Reid said.

“No one’s ever had anything against Sen. Burris. Like any other senator, he’ll have to learn the ropes and not get lost getting to committee hearings, like I have. I think he’ll come in with people open to meeting with him and getting to know him. I think it will be just fine,” said Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota on the matter. Most other comments by senators stated that they were not against Burris as a person, but were against his appointment by Rod Blagojevich.

With the appointment, Burris becomes the only African-American member of the United States Senate. This makes the count of Democrats to Republicans in the Senate 58 Democrats and 41 Republicans, with the final seat waiting on a vote recount ordered by Norm Coleman in his loss to Al Franken of Minnesota.

A Frame Of Conditions That Require Speech Therapy Or A Speech Pathologist.}

 • Find Out More About:
 • Speech Pathology Sydney

Submitted by: Develop Speech

There are four basic skills in communicating any language. Those are listening, speaking, reading and writing. The training for the above skills is imparted to the children from the parents to the teachers.

But sometimes children have problems saying certain sounds or words making it hard for others to understand what they’re trying to say. If we find the following problems of the kids, then they require a speech therapy for toddlers.

. Trouble saying certain sounds words correctly,

. When the vocal quality of an individual is altered/ changed in such a way that it is thought to be abnormal to the listener,

. Difficulty understanding people or having trouble putting words together to express thoughts, . Repeating certain sounds and/or having trouble saying a complete word, Stuttering is a fluency disorder.

Some children will grow out of the problem themselves, while others will need to see a speech or language therapist to remedy the problem.

Speech therapy for children is the treatment or the correction of a speech impairment which resulted from birth, or from disease, injury or prior medical treatment. It is the skill to identify types of communication problems (articulation; fluency; voice; receptive and expressive language disorders, etc.) and the best way to treat them.

Speech Pathologists provide a wide range of services, mainly on an individual basis, but also as support for individuals, families, support groups, and providing information for the general public. Speech services begin with initial screening for communication and swallowing disorders and continue with assessment and diagnosis, consultation for the provision of advice regarding management, intervention and treatment, and provision counseling and other follow-up services for these disorders. Speech-therapist can work in a wide range of settings. The clinical environments include both public and private hospitals, and home-health care. They also work as part of the support structure in the education system working in public and private schools, colleges, and universities. Speech-language experts agree that parental involvement is crucial to the success of a child’s progress in speech or language therapy.

Adults may also experience speech and language difficulties for a variety of reasons. Information about specific types of speech and language disorders and as of some medical conditions which require speech therapy for adults are as follows:

SPEECH DISORDERS..

Apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder. It is caused by damage to the parts of the brain related to speaking. Other terms include apraxia of speech, acquired apraxia of speech, verbal apraxia, and dyspraxia. People with apraxia of speech have trouble sequencing the sounds in syllables and words. The severity depends on the nature of the brain damage.

Dysarthria The muscles of the mouth, face, and respiratory system may become weak, move slowly, or not move at all after a stroke or other brain injury. The type and severity of dysarthria depend on which area of the nervous system is affected.

Stuttering affects the fluency of speech. It begins during childhood and, in some cases, lasts throughout life. The disorder is characterized by disruptions in the production of speech sounds, also called “disfluency.” Most people produce brief disfluency from time to time. For instance, some words are repeated and others are preceded by “um” or “uh.” Disfluency are not necessarily a problem; however, they can impede communication when a person produces too many of them.

LANGUAGE DISORDERS.

Aphasia is a disorder that results from damage to the parts of the brain that contain language. Aphasia causes problems with any or all the following: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Some medical conditions like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Dementia, Huntington’s disease, Laryngeal Cancer, Oral Cancer, Right Hemisphere Brain Injury, Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury

There are separate standardized assessment tools administered for infants, school-aged children, adolescents and adults. Assessments primarily examine the form, content, and use of language, as well as reading, writing, and some cognitive functions. Speech therapy ideas have an in-depth understanding of language and communication, knowledge of how and where it breaks down, and how to capitalize on existing skills.

New Ghanaian currency introduced

Tuesday, July 3, 2007

New currency notes are being introduced in Ghana today. The new currency, to be called the Ghanaian cedi, replaces the previous cedi which has been in circulation since 17 February, 1967.

The Ghanaian cedi will be exchanged at 10,000 old cedis to one new Ghanaian cedi. The exchange rate against the U.S. dollar starts at GH¢0.92 to one U.S. dollar. The new ISO code for the currency is GHS, and the new symbol, GH¢.

The change, which was originally scheduled by the Bank of Ghana to start on July 1, 2007, will instead start on Tuesday July 3, as the original date is Ghana’s Republic Day.

Monday, July 2, was declared a public holiday as the actual Republic Day fell on a Sunday. July 3, is thus the first day that the currency will be available to the public as banks open to the general public. This is because ATMs were shut down over the weekend so that the currencies could be checked and replaced in all of them nationwide. The old and new currencies will be used concurrently until the end of December 2007, when the old currency will cease to be legal tender.

This is the third Ghanaian cedi to be introduced in the country since 1965.

World’s first double arm transplant undertaken in Munich

Saturday, August 2, 2008

A 54-year-old German farmer who lost both arms in a farming accident six years ago has become the first patient to receive a complete double arm transplant. The patient, whose name has not been released, underwent the operation at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, part of the Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München), last week; he is said to be recovering well.

The operation lasted 15 hours and was performed by a team of 40 specialists in Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery, Orthopedics and Anesthesiology, under the direction of the head of the Plastics and Hand Surgery department, Prof. Hans-Günther Machens, Dr. Christoph Höhnke (Head of Transplants, Senior Physician; Plastics and Hand Surgery) and Prof. Edgar Biemer, the former Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Clinic.

In a press statement released by the clinic, it was revealed that the patient had been thoroughly physically checked and had psychological counselling prior to the surgery to ensure he was mentally stable enough to cope with the procedure. Since completion of the surgery, the patient has been on immuno-suppressant drugs to prevent rejection of the new limbs.

Following the surgery, the press release from the clinic’s press manager, Dr. Tanja Schmidhofer, included the following statement:

The flow of blood was [re-]started in intervals of 20 minutes because the anaesthetists had to make sure that the patient would not suffer from the blood flowing back from the transplanted parts. No significant swelling was seen, nor indeed any ischemia (lack of blood flow to the tissues). This is a testament to the surgeons who established a fully functioning blood flow…the main nerves, the Musculocutaneus, Radial and Ulnar nerves were all attached and sewn together, and finally an external fixator was applied, with pins in the lower and upper arms, avoiding the risk of pressure points and sores. The operation was successfully completed after 15 hours.

Without the immuno-suppressant drugs given to the patient, the risk of there being a Graft-versus-Host Reaction or GvHR, would have been significant due to the upper arm containing a large amount of bone marrow, consisting of ICC’s or Immuno-Competent Cells, which would have triggered a near total rejection of the new limbs. A GvHR is a condition which results in the cells from the transplant attacking the immune system of the body.

Indications from the clinic suggest that the double attachment went well, although it could be up to 2 full years before the patient is able to move the arms.

The donor arms came from an unnamed teenager, who is believed to have died in a car accident.

Understanding The Acfi (Aged Care Funding Instrument) In Australia

 • Find Out More About:
 • Mini Neck Lift Cost

Submitted by: Drew Dwyer

The Aged Care Funding Instrument, known in the industry as ACFI, is the primary mechanism available to fund the core care needs of accredited aged care facilities.

While based on the different resource requirements of individual persons, the ACFI is primarily intended to deliver funding to the financial entity or facility providing the care.

The ACFI consists of 12 questions about assessed care needs, each having four ratings (A, B, C or D) and two diagnostic sections.

It proceeds as a 5-step process for funding approval.

Step 1: Assessment

Step 2: Checklist

Step 3: Rating A to D

Step 4: Submissions

Step 5: Record keeping

A best practice guideline for any nursing home is that they should conduct a sequence of scheduled assessments on a resident that culminates in a formal case conference, which includes the resident and/or their loved ones, where their care is discussed. The case conference ends with a care plan being written, which is then reviewed by the RN in charge of the care with their team every three months. ACFI funding is then the result of consultation and allocation of resources. Good clinical leadership is necessary in order to gather evidence of the resident s needs, conduct case conferences, write care plans, and maintain the review process.

Recently there have been articles suggesting fraud and incorrect allocations of funds within an ACFI application. Whilst it would be rare that there is a false claim, more often than not facilities are not claiming enough of the funds available. It is essential that facilities apply for the ACFI correctly, because if facilities are not claiming the appropriate funding for clients the whole facility suffers. A domino effect occurs and resources that should be used for wages, services and equipment are not available, leading to further pressure on facility staff.

One question here is should families know about the allocations of funding to which their family member is entitled? The ACFI tools and system are designed for the service providers to validate the resources they use to care for the resident. It is not something that is shared with the representative/family. Many operators are not entirely clear on what s available for their facility or even how to apply until the full assessments and validation of a resident s condition takes place.

The ACFI is a complicated and confusing system of resource allocation, even for facility staff, and it only adds further confusion by including the input of families/representatives. It is simply a process that they don t need to be involved with unless there are unmet needs that will have to be paid for by the resident or family. To avoid this situation, staff that are dealing with ACFI applications must ensure that the application process has been completed correctly to gain all the funding for resources available.

Applying and understanding ACFI can be a challenge for facility managers and ACFI officers, especially as the Federal Government continue to make changes to the funding increments. Frontline Care Solutions we will help you unravel the mystery of the application and help you ensure you claim those much needed extra resources. Our Understanding and Implementing Your ACFI seminar is run in all capital cities throughout the year which is a must for all ACFI Officers, CNCs and Facility Managers.

Thai government reportedly planning Internet censorship

Thursday, January 26, 2006

According to a report in the Bangkok Post, the Thai government’s Public Relations Department is considering blocking the website of Manager Online as a possible instigator of “social chaos”.

The report claims that a document was submitted to the Communications Authority of Thailand urging a block be issued against the site as the current calls for participation in anti-government rallies by outspoken government critic Sondhi Limthongkul may be a threat to social order.

Other reports claim that CAT Telecom cut off a live satellite broadcast by Sondi on the ASTV satellite network on Tuesday evening during a discussion related to a planned anti-government rally on February 4.
