UK mounts rescue operation for Spanish trawler in distress in North Atlantic storm

This afternoon the RAF launched an operation to rescue nineteen sailors from a Spanish trawler in difficulties in a North Atlantic storm.

Radio contact with the FV Cibeles was lost yesterday evening at 2030 UTC when the crew reported to the ship’s owners that they were in trouble. Last night, UK Coastguard picked up a satellite emergency beacon signal as winds reached speeds of over 70 mph.

This morning a RAF Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft located the ship adrift 180 miles off the Scottish Western Isles. A nearby tanker, the Aegean Spirit, diverted with the intention of taking the trawler in tow and arrived at 1500 UTC.

However, the tanker was unable to take the trawler on tow, and with no other vessels capable of towing the ship nearby, the Coastguard Rescue Seeking helicopter “Mike Uniform” was launched from Stornoway to extract the crew. The tanker remained on scene to offer some protection from the weather, currently reported as gale force winds and rough seas.

MOEA Taiwan signs MOUs with 5 global WiMAX companies to connect with networking industry world-wide

At the 1st day of WiMAX Forum Taipei Showcase & Conference, Ministry of Economic Affairs of R.O.C. Taiwan (MOEA Taiwan) not only set M-Taiwan Pavilion supervised by Industrial Development Bureau of MOEA Taiwan, but also signed MOUs with five world-class WiMAX companies to enhance the advance of networking industry in Taiwan especially in WiMAX environment.

In the contract-signing ceremony, MOEA Taiwan chose Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola Inc., Nokia-Siemens, Starent Networks, and Sprint-Nextel to sign MOUs with different technologies such as interoperability testing (IOT) to help companies in Taiwan with testing and purchasing WiMAX networking devices and develop solutions with high prime costs to expand the opportunity in global marketing.

“Governments and networking industry in Taiwan is still promoting on M-Taiwan project, the investment with WiMAX infrastructure in Taiwan is the 2nd highest in the world, we estimate that by 2012, the production value of WiMAX will break NT$140 billion. With the MOUs signing, the industry development of WiMAX infrastructure in Taiwan will be improved rapidly with product testing and lots ways of applications to ensure the prime position in the global WiMAX chain.” Steve Ruey-long Chen (Minister of Economic Affairs of Taiwan) remarked at the Ceremony.

According to MOEA Taiwan, this MOUs signing is the 2nd time after signing with world-class companies like Intel, NEC, Nortel, and Rohde & Schwarz Technology. With this MOUs signing, it will improve the networking industry and WiMAX infrastructure in Taiwan.

Man cuts off his own penis in UK restaurant

An unnamed Polish man, 35, is being treated at a hospital in London, England after he cut off his penis with a knife at Zizzi’s pizza restaurant on Strand Street in the city of Westminster.

“We were called at 9.00 p.m. on Sunday to a restaurant on the Strand to reports of a man in possession of a knife. Officers attended to discover a man believed to be 30-40 years old suffering from an injury. He was taken to a south London hospital in a stable condition. No one else was injured and his injuries are believed to be self inflicted,” said a Scotland Yard spokesperson.

Police had to use CS tear gas on the victim in order to subdue him to get him to the hospital to receive medical attention.

Witnesses say that the man came into the restaurant, picked a knife up off the floor of the kitchen and then got onto a table and cut off his penis.

“At around 9 p.m. on Sunday, a man walked into the Zizzi restaurant on The Strand, down the stairs to the basement restaurant area and tried to enter a kitchen. Members of staff stopped him, at which he ran into a second kitchen area. The man then picked up a kitchen knife and slashed himself across the wrist and groin areas before running back into the restaurant, where he continued to stab himself,” said a spokesperson for the restaurant.

Surgeons are attempting to reattach his organ in what doctors call the first time this kind of surgery has been performed in the UK. It is not yet known if the operation was successful.

“If it doesn’t take, then you would have to re-amputate it. Attaching the penis is a very long, complex and painstaking operation,” said Francis Chinegwundoh, a urologist at St Bartholomew’s Hospital which is located in London. Chinegwundoh also said that that the victim will not feel his penis and it will not be possible for him to maintain an erection unless he uses a special machine, even if the operation were a success.

No people or animals hurt in rural Australian fire

According to local police chief Craig Van Breugel there were no injuries or loss of life to animals or local residents in the recent fire in the rural Australian town of Toongabbie. “There was no injury to persons or animals. That is all I have for you,” Detective Acting Sergent Van Breugel said in response to queries from Wikinews.

The fire began about 2:20 pm local time (UTC+11) between Humphrey and Eagle Hawk roads, north of the township proper. The local Country Fire Authority brigade managed to contain the blaze to approximately three to five hectares.

Victoria Police have recently indicated that the area around where the fire was started is only accessible by four wheel drives (4WD) or off-road motorcycles; it is popular with dirt bike riders and 4WD enthusiasts.

It used to be that folding doors were only supposed to be used outside but recent trends have shown that many tend to use these doors used inside the homes now. Before, you would usually see them placed near swimming pools as some decorative items. But now, these doors can even prove useful inside your room.

If you happen to rent a house with lots of open space, you will not have any problem hosting the party at home without having to compromise your privacy. Some people do not like inviting people to their homes because that would be an intrusion to their privacy. However, you can use folding doors as perfectly functional room dividers. Thus, once you have closed the part that marks your space for your room and stay in it, you would not hear lots of disturbing noise from the other division which is the party venue.

Again, you can have the doors as your dividers and successfully maximize the use of your open space. Jordan’s King Abdullah meets survivors of Beslan school siege

On November 5, 2006, King Abdullah II of Jordan met with 90 survivors of the Beslan school hostage crisis during their week long vacation in Jordan, organised at the King’s expense.

The King watched the students perform traditional dances and reviewed artworks that they had created celebrating the theme of cross-cultural communication and understanding. The event took place at the King’s Academy, in Madaba, Jordan.

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..

Septic tank systems are required for every home and building that requires plumbing. These systems safely remove and treat waste water before returning the clean water to the water table. There are different types of septic systems available, including alternative septic systems. Alternative septic systems are usually installed in ‘difficult’ sites with conventional methods. The type of alternative chosen depends on the type of drain field, climate, and soil conditions.

The following are the different kinds of alternative septic systems:

Sand Filter Septic System: This septic system is used in an area that lacks enough soil for waste water treatment. The sand is used to treat the wastewater before it enters the drain field. The system consists of the septic tank, pump and pump chamber, sand filter, and drain field. The sand separates the pump tank from the drain field. As well, the sand is used replace the shortage of soil in the area where the tank is installed. The system can be installed above the ground or below the ground.

Aerobic Treatment Unit (ATU): This system uses oxygen as part of the break down process. The result is cleaner treated wastewater. The unit has an aeration chamber where bacteria reside. These vegetative microbes will break down and digest the waste. Aerobic treatment units will generate clean wastewater.

Mound Septic System: For the Mound Septic System, there is a particular type of drainage system that is elevated above ground level or directly on the ground surface. There is specific sand that is placed over the ground. Treatment of the wastewater involves the use of the sand. It is composed of a gravel bed that contains a network of pressurized pipes. The wastewater is delivered to a dosing tank. After it goes to the dosing tank, the water goes to the soil absorption field.

Gravity Septic System: This system utilizes gravity as the main part of the wastewater treatment process. By doing so, the wastewater travels through the septic tank into the drainage field. The drainage field consists of a group of trenches. The final treatment of the waste matter is done by the soil. A Gravity Septic System works best when there is dry soil. It is the most widely used alternative septic tank system.

Pressure Distribution System: This system is powered by dosing chambers and a series of small pipes. It provides dosing and resting cycles to ensure uniform wastewater is dispersed in the drainage field.

The first sign that a homeowner may need to switch from a conventional septic system to an alternative septic system is if they experience flooding or unusual water gathering in a backyard or field. Because there are a variety of different septic systems available, including alternative septic systems, it is important to understand the benefits of each system and determine which type of system is best for your property and home. When installing any type of septic system, the installation should only be performed by a professional to ensure it is done properly and safely.

Chef who appeared on Gordon Ramsay’s ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ commits suicide

Joseph Cerniglia, a chef who had appeared on Gordon Ramsay’s television show Kitchen Nightmares, has commited suicide. Cerniglia was the owner of Italian restaurant Campania. He jumped off a bridge into the Hudson river on the New York–New Jersey border. At the time of filming in 2007, Cerniglia owed suppliers $80,000.

Officials reported that 39-year-old Cerniglia had jumped off of the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson. His death has officially been ruled as suicide. His body was retrieved from the river after reports of a man jumping off of the bridge.

Ramsay released a statement to the Press Association saying “I was fortunate to spend time with Joe during the first season of Kitchen Nightmares. Joe was a brilliant chef, and our thoughts go out to his family, friends and staff.”

Cerniglia told Ramsay about his personal debt when he came to the restaurant in 2007. He said “I am financially in trouble. The debt of the restaurant alone is overwhelming. My personal debt — wife, kids, mortgage — that’s a lot of debt”.
