Venezuela opens granite processing facility in Bolívar

Monday, February 18, 2013

Venezuela’s government has opened a granite processing plant in the state of Bolívar, with the intention of providing about 25% of the granite required nationwide.

Ricardo Menéndez, vice president of the Productive Economic Area, said Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has yearned for the creation of this project to empower Venezuelan construction. Granito Bolívar is reportedly the most modern Venezuelan granite plant, not consuming community water or electricity, and is also the largest, with a daily capacity to supply enough material for use in construction of about 820 houses.

Menéndez said, “These granite blocks are the natural resources of our country, are the wealth we have as a country and often [some] simply decided to remove this richness from our country and take them to other countries” ((es))Spanish language: ?Esos bloques de granito son la riquezas naturales de nuestro país, son las riquezas que tenemos como patria y que muchas veces sencillamente esas riquezas decidieron sacarlas de nuestro territorio nacional y llevarlas a otros países.

According to Menéndez, with the help of a state plan, Venezuela intends to exploit its 40,000 million cubic meters or more of granite reserves, generating a set of factories. “[T]he central theme is that these plants, all these factories, are for the construction of socialism; that means using our potential, develop the value chain within the country and of course that yields benefits from the point of view of the production system’s organization…. [Granito] Bolívar is not only the vision that historically we had of exposing richness, but the industries, basic industries we have, that level of our workers in the basic industries and in addition the development of the potential we have in the state” ((es))Spanish language: ?el tema central es que estas plantas todas estas fábricas son para la construcción del socialismo, eso significa utilizar nuestras potencialidades, dessarrollar la cadena de valor dentro del país y por supuesto que eso genere beneficios desde el punto de vista de la organización del sistema productivo …

For the construction of the plant, supplied by 23 quarries, the government of Bolívar provided about 30 million bolívares (US$4.7 million) and the national government €2.3 million (US$3 million). Bolívar reportedly has reserves of about 40,000 million tons of red, black, pink and white granite, sufficient for domestic demand for 200 years.

Is Duct Cleaning Beneficial?

 • Find Out More About:
 • Fluid Chillers

byadmin

The duct system in your home or business is one of the most important but hidden components of your space. It runs throughout the attic and walls of your home. It allows for heated or cooled air to move through it from the heating and cooling system to various rooms of the home. If you imagine this open space and large tube-like structure, you can imagine that the interior can become dirty and even covered in allergens. For many people, duct cleaning offers a nice benefit for them. It may improve your comfort level in your home, in fact.

What Does It Do?

Duct cleaning works to clean out the interior surfaces of your ductwork. Over time, these surfaces build up with debris, dust, dander from pets, and pollen from outside. They cake onto the sides of the walls and build up. This material can close your heating and cooling air filters and makes your system run harder. The biggest benefit from cleaning your ducts is that it helps clear this away, allowing air to move easier. It also helps to improve the overall energy bills you have – air can move easier, and that means your system works less. In addition, removing all of these particles can help to minimize the amount of dust in your home while also helping to reduce allergens that could be making you or your loved one sick.

If you have not had a duct cleaning, now is the time to consider it. The process does not take long but once done; it can give you some peace of mind. You will learn it is possible to clean away years of buildup. This is material entering your air supply every day. Over time, this takes a toll on your system, minimizing its efficiency and limiting its lifespan.

Recall of Thomas the Tank Engine toys due to lead-paint fears

Thursday, June 21, 2007

A recall issued last week for Thomas the Tank Engine toys made in China and containing lead-based paint, is the latest scare for consumers, and follows recent scandals involving Chinese-made pet food, pharmaceuticals, toothpaste and other toys, The New York Times has reported in a series of articles.

Last week, RC2, a U.S. toy company based in Oak Brook, Illinois, issued a recall for its popular wooden “Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends” train sets. The recall involved 1.5 million “Thomas Wooden Railway” vehicles and train sets sold at toy stores and various retailers across the U.S. from January 2005 through June 2007.

A subsequent recall has been issued in the United Kingdom, where Thomas the Tank Engine was originated in the 1940s as a character in a children’s story by the Reverend W.V. Awdry. Around 70,000 toys are involved in the U.K. recall, according to The Guardian.

“RC2 has determined that the surface paints on the recalled products contain lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a press release dated June 13. “Consumers should take the recalled toys away from young children immediately and contact RC2 Corp. for a replacement toy,” the commission said.

Those “adverse health effects” could include brain and nerve damage, especially in young children, as well as blood and brain disorders. Severe lead poisoning causes vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, anemia, loss of appetite, headaches and in particularly high doses, coma and death.

In an article on Monday, The New York Times reported that recalls have been issued for 24 different toys in the U.S. in the past year, and every one of them was made in China. According to the Toy Industry Association, toys made in China account for around 70 percent to 80 percent of all the toys sold in the U.S., The Times said.

“These are items that children are supposed to be playing with,” Prescott Carlson was quoted as saying by The Times. Carlson is a co-founder of a child-safety website called Imperfect Parent, which tracks recalls of toys and other baby products. “It should be at a point where companies in the United States that are importing these items are held liable,” Carlson said.

RC2 would not comment to The Times, and a Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman would not say how long ago the problem with the lead paint was discovered.

For a follow-up article on Tuesday, The Times visited a factory in Dongguan, in China’s Guangdong province, where the “Thomas and Friends” toys are made. The paper interviewed workers and took photos on the factory floor.

“You’re intruding,” a factory manager identified only as Zhong was quoted as telling the reporters. “Tell me, why exactly are you here?”

During the visit, a reporter, translator and a photographer were detained by factory officials, and released a day later after local police and government officials intervened.

The factory also produces other toys for RC2, including toy John Deere trucks, NASCAR racing models and M&M’s cars, The Times said. RC2 makes the toys under licenses from various companies. The “Thomas and Friends” toys are made under license from Hit Entertainment, which owns the “Thomas” brand.

According to RC2, items in the “Thomas and Friends” recall are:

 • Red James Engine & Red James’ # 5 Coal Tender
 • Red Lights & Sounds James Engine & Red James’ #5
 • Lights & Sounds Coal Tender
 • James with Team Colors Engine & James with Team Colors *#5 Coal Tender
 • Red Skarloey Engine
 • Brown & Yellow Old Slow Coach
 • Red Hook & Ladder Truck & Red Water Tanker Truck
 • Red Musical Caboose
 • Red Sodor Line Caboose
 • Red Coal Car labeled “2006 Day Out With Thomas” on the Side
 • Red Baggage Car
 • Red Holiday Caboose
 • Red “Sodor Mail” Car
 • Red Fire Brigade Truck
 • Red Fire Brigade Train
 • Deluxe Sodor Fire Station
 • Red Coal Car
 • Yellow Box Car
 • Red Stop Sign
 • Yellow Railroad Crossing Sign
 • Yellow “Sodor Cargo Company” Cargo Piece
 • Smelting Yard
 • Ice Cream Factory

Toys listed that are marked with codes containing “WJ” or “AZ” are not included in the recall.

Earlier, RC2 said that customers would have to cover shipping costs to return the toys to the company. It later agreed to cover postage after angry complaints by parents, The Times said in an article yesterday. Refunds will take about two months.

Five hundred cattle die of neglect on West Australia property

Thursday, February 17, 2005 RSPCA inspectors found about 500 cattle dead on a remote station in Western Australia. Water is being trucked in to care for another 2500 cattle on Windidda station, east of Wilun, which is leased to an Aboriginal corporation.

State Agriculture Minister Kim Chance says the propery was found abandoned and only two of the property’s 13 watering stations were working.

“The lease is owned by an aboriginal corporation (but) the precise of identity of the corporation is somewhat obscure,” Mr Chance said.

WA RSPCA spokesperson Kelly Oversby said they made the shocking discovery after an anonymous tip-off.

“Experienced inspectors have told us it is the worst case of animal cruelty they have ever seen,” Ms Overby said.

“As well as the cattle, brumbies, camels, dogs and kangaroos have all perished.”

How To Choose Between Wheelchairs In New London Ct

 • Find Out More About:
 • System Manager

byAlma Abell

Mobility tends to have a huge impact on a person’s life. When that mobility is hindered in any way, there are medical devices that can work to restore at least a portion of a person’s ability to move around. For Wheelchairs in New London CT, it is important to shop around, look at all of the various benefits, and choose a chair that works best for the specific situation. Here are several things to look for when checking out the possibilities.

Talk to a Health Care Provider

For those new to wheelchairs in New London CT, it is important to talk to a physician to learn about their specific needs. For some, a manual wheelchair is the best option. It allows a person to move his or herself to different places without the assistance of someone else. The ability to self propel provides an extra measure of freedom, however it also has its own limitations as far as a person’s strength and endurance when it comes to extensive distances. On the other hand, someone wanting increased mobility can take advantage of power-assisted wheelchairs.

Decide on Important Features

Even after choosing a general mobility assistance device, there are still other specifics that need to be considered before purchasing a wheelchair. If the wheelchair is going to be used at home, it may need to have different features than one that provides mobility in an alternate location. Even the type of transportation available to a person will affect the features and type of wheelchair that he or she selects.

Research Different Models

After choosing the type of wheelchair and the necessary features, many people are surprised to learn that there are various brands and models that offer similar things. This means that much like buying a car, it is possible to shop around. This is a great time to consider the price of the model, the warranty it includes and even how satisfied others are with their purchases. Questions about whether or not the wheelchair folds up for easy transportation in a vehicle and similar concerns should be asked now to help solidify the decision on which wheelchair offers the best option for a person’s specific situation.

Death toll of Bahrain tourist boat capsizing rises to 57

Saturday, April 1, 2006At least 57 people are now known to have died when a boat designed similar to a traditional dhow capsized one mile of the coast of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. Seventeen were Indian and a further 13 of the dead are British; people of another six nationalities are also known to have died. The passengers were mostly foreigners from the Nass-Murray and Roberts construction company, and were enjoying an evening dinner cruise in celebration of their completion of part of the Bahrain World Trade Centre towers. Most who died were dining on the lower deck, and were trapped below.

Over 130 people were onboard the boat at the time, although some say the boat was only licensed to carry 120. Others say the limit was 150. Eyewitnesses say the boat was overloaded. The boat capsized in calm seas soon after it left, trapping many below. Helicopters from the US Navy searched for 13 missing persons until Friday morning, when the search was called off. The dhow had been modified to have an extra, higher deck making the vessel less stable. The exact cause is unknown – suggestions from eyewitnesses include the boat suddenly turning left, being hit by a wave, and many of the passengers moving to one side of the boat together. The Bahrain Interior Ministry is to investigate the accident and establish if the boat was seaworthy.

Icelandic government passes Icesave deal; €12,000 debt per citizen

Thursday, December 31, 2009

The Icelandic Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir and her coalition government narrowly escaped a commitment to resign as a €3.8 billion bill to repay British and Dutch savers following the collapse of Icesave online banking passed. The vote margin was only three votes.

Only a matter of hours before the anticipated final vote, Wikileaks announced the disclosure of one of 23 documents suppressed by the Icelandic Minister of Finance: an apparent legal summary of meetings between Icelandic and EU representatives held in Brussels in November 2008. The leaked document discusses the then-assessed liabilities of Iceland at 60% of GDP, considerably higher than the reported 40% which repaying Icesave deposit holders entails.

Amongst the other details in the report is emphasis of the deep-seated anger of the Icelandic people at the situation around the financial collapse, particularly the UK’s use of anti-terrorism legislation in its approach to the country’s banks. Iceland’s interpretation of the situation, and its financial treaty obligations with the EU, considered foreign deposits lost through force majeure. All 27 EU members disagreed with Iceland’s interpretation and Peter Mandelson, although he resigned from the Barroso Commission in October, presented the legal position that Iceland could not pass legislation that did not ensure treaty-mandated minimum balance returns from failed Icelandic banks.

Leaked private communication from Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, Iceland’s then-foreign minister, compared the potential liabilities the country faced with the reparations imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles in the wake of World War I.

Three banks failed in the financial crisis: Kaupthing, Glitnir, and Landsbanki. As the list of creditors emerged it was found that, among others, UK councils had around £900 million with the banks. Landsbanki agreed to repay the majority of funds held, giving council depositors priority status. Approximately £200 million on deposit with Glitnir is at-risk; the bank has stated the councils will be treated equally with all other creditors seeing them likely to only recover 30% of the amount Glitnir held.

Kaupthing faces other difficulties. The UK’s Serious Fraud Office began an investigation earlier this month into the bank’s UK activities. At issue are allegations savers were misled into selecting one particular account type, plus suspicious financial activity suggesting substantial amounts were moved out of the bank in the days prior to its collapse.

At present, UK councils have received little more than ten percent of their over £900 million deposits. They are among over 8,500 creditors claiming a staggering total of £20 billion. The largest single claimant is the British Depositors’ and Investors’ Guarantee Fund seeking €5 billion, and, of some note, Formula One racing team Williams claiming around £10 million in unpaid sponsorship from Glitnir who took on the liability from the Icelandic buyers of Hamleys.

This article is a featured article. It is considered one of the best works of the Wikinews community. See Wikinews:Featured articles for more information.

Debt to 84% government-owned Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) by Glitnir stands at around £500 million; much of the actual debt written off in 2008 as RBS posted £24 billion losses. Further write-offs by the bank are expected to total less than £50 million.

Icelanders resented the discovery that fifteen senior ex-employees of Landsbanki claim €14 million between them, including a single claim of €2.7 million. Suspicion exists that the banks arranged substantial interest-free loans for various of their shareholders and executives.

Today’s announcement of the Icelandic government’s agreement to pay out €3.8 billion keeps their application for EU membership on-track, although each one of the country’s 320,000 citizens effectively faces a €12,000 debt.

An Inspirational Story; ‘The Salt Of The Earth’

By Gary M. Miller

This is a true story about a self-employed carpenter who was struggling with his life. He had a lot of the common problems that carpenters have. He had been in trouble for drinking and using drugs and he had been forced to go to a treatment center many years earlier for his problems. He had been able get help for those problems but he still struggled a lot to make ends meet especially in his financial life. He also was having a lot of trouble finding the right girlfriend who he could stay with. Nobody seemed good enough for him so he jumped from girlfriend to girlfriend, never really finding true love. In fact, true love he thought, was really just a ‘lie’ and the world was generally a selfish place that he hoped he could find his way through by some vague miracle.

One day, the carpenter met an odd little man named ‘Walking Bob’. Walking Bob was a very interesting person because he had fought in the Korean War as a colonel and had come back to the United States as a celebrated soldier. The carpenter really admired Walking Bob because he heard that he had been a Golden Gloves Boxer for many years. He was a grey haired little man with a lot of great stories to tell.

Probably the most interesting story that Walking Bob had to tell was an extreme tragedy that had befallen him many years after the war. He had returned to America and gotten married to his college sweetheart. He had also raised two children who had eventually grown and gone off to college. One day, when Walking Bob’s wife had gone to the airport to pick up the two kids, they were involved in a terrible car accident. Walking Bob’s wife and two children were killed and Walking Bob was left alone. Because of this terrible tragedy, Walking Bob became very depressed and suffered a heart attack. He was hospitalized and the doctors didn’t know if he would live. He awoke from his hospital bed and told the doctors and nurses that he would be leaving the hospital and would be going on a cross country walk.

The doctors and nurses tried very hard to change Walking Bob’s mind. They told him he was ‘mentally unstable’ but Walking Bob insisted on his plan of leaving the hospital. He began walking for days and days and he told his story to the people he met along the way. He also read from a book called A Course in Miracles as he walked. He practiced the lessons that were written in the book and he spoke to the people he met as he walked.

One day, while walking along his way, he visited a charity organization. Inside, there were some children who were suffering from terminal illnesses and Walking Bob began to cry. People had been giving him money as he had told them his story but now, as he heard the stories of these children, he knew that the money he had been collecting should go to these children instead of him. He gave away everything he had and continued walking. He began collecting more and more money as he walked and he told his story as well as the story of these children. As he collected money, he continued to donate it all to the charity organization known as the ‘Make a Wish Foundation’.

The self-employed carpenter who was struggling with his life was lucky enough to meet Walking Bob. He heard the story that Walking Bob was telling and he asked him if he could meet with him again and talk some more. Walking Bob decided to take a rest and to stay in the town where the carpenter worked so that the two of them could talk each day. Walking Bob told him about ‘A Course in Miracles’ and told him he should read the book and practice the lessons. The carpenter thought the book was a bit strange but he agreed to read it just to please Walking Bob. Each day Walking Bob talked to the carpenter about his war stories and his Golden Gloves Boxing days and also about A Course in Miracles.

Eventually, the carpenter started practicing the lessons in the Course more seriously and he noticed that his life was actually getting better. He met a girl who he really loved and she asked him to move away with him to a foreign country. The girl’s family was very poor and she had hoped that the carpenter might help her and her family to work their way out of the problems they were in. The carpenter was very scared at first but he remembered a line from the book that Walking Bob had given him. It said ‘The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.’

After many months, the carpenter packed up his bags and boarded a plane. He found a job in this far away country and eventually started a business of his own. He practiced the lessons in the book and followed his heart. His life became better and better. His company eventually became very successful and he married the girl he had fallen in love with years before. He helped her family out of the impoverished state they were in and he began helping other people from the impoverished country as well. After struggling for so many years as the salt of the Earth, he had become just like Walking Bob and was no longer struggling but was happier than he had ever been.

Bali nine lawyer challenges police on legality of drug case

Wednesday, October 12, 2005

The lawyer for one of the members of the so called Bali Nine is claiming he will challenge the legality of the indictment against his client.

Adnan Wirawan, the lawyer of Martin Stephens from Wollongong, says his client has been unfairly accused as being the ring leader of an alleged conspiracy to smuggle drugs: “He’s a human suitcase… he was being told what to do.”

Stephens appeared in Denpasar District Court on Wednesday. The prosecution claimed that Stephens and Renae Lawrence, from Newcastle, had their hotel and trip to Bali paid for by the accused mastermind, Andrew Chan.

Stephens’ mother, Michelle, was in court for her son’s first appearance and says she will support him throughout his trial: “I’m here to support my son, and I love him and I believe in him. And that’s all I can say.”
