For those who study Mandarin in China, there is a lot more to learn than just language. Below is a list of 5 things which study Mandarin in China students tend to pick up from living within China.

1) Using chopsticks

This one is slightly obvious, if you didn’t know how to use them before, you certainly know how to use them now. Being able to use chopsticks will become necessary if you want to conveniently eat within local Chinese restaurants. Usually study Mandarin in China student pick up this skill within the first month.

2) Saving money

Within the first year study Mandarin in China students begin to change their mentally and start to shop like the Chinese. Students often find great places to eat and drink for prices under $4 USD. Students also learn quickly how to bargain in all aspects of life, from buying a new pair of snickers to renting out a flat.

3) Doing daily exercise

One amazing and admirable thing to see is large groups of elders getting up in the early hours of the morning practicing tai chi in the parks. Why? For health and fitness. What some learn Mandarin in China students may find completely admirable is the fact Chinese make a concerted effort to get some sort of physical exercise every day, which is a lot more than can be said about the stagnant developed countries who tend to become fatter, laze around, and complain about health issues. This emphasis on health usually becomes a part of student daily life.

4) Eating smaller meals

This one is more directed to the Americans. One of the differences in eating habits between the east and the west is the size of the dishes. Comparing to huge western sizes, which at times comes across as food plumbed on your plate, Chinese often eat more frequently through out the day and usually tuck on smaller servings. Their eating style also combines elements of meat and vegetables, balancing their daily nutritional needs. For those who learn Mandarin in China, students tend to go home taking elements of cooking techniques and portions with them.

5) Not taking “no” for an answe

Not taking no for an answer. One thing that the Chinese are good at is not taking no for an answer. (well, at least not taking the first no for an answer.) This type of mind set is competitive within other aspects of live, and it is something which those who learn Mandarin in China tend to pick up. From your home, office, or school, not backing down from a challenge, and not giving up after your first failure are all elements which the Chinese society has and which is absorbed by learning students.

When you learn Mandarin in China there is much with is experience and accomplished other than language learning. Student often go back to their home countries fluent in the language they set out to master, and more competent and confident in both business and daily life.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Mississippi tornado kills at least ten

Sunday, April 25, 2010

At least ten people are dead after a large, destructive tornado tore through Yazoo City, Mississippi yesterday. The tornado has been rated an EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, and is estimated to have had at most 170 mph winds.

Five of the deaths were in Choctaw County, four in Yazoo County, and one in Holmes County. 21 people have been hospitalized as a result of the storm, and others have been trapped in cars and houses. Multiple injuries resulted from cars being blown off of Interstate 55 during the storm.

The tornado moved along a path 97 miles long and 1.75 miles wide at its widest point. Among damaged or destroyed buildings included at least twenty houses, a church, and several businesses. According to Yazoo City mayor McArthur Straughter, the storm ripped the roofs off of every building in the area. Fallen trees and debris are hindering access to some parts of Yazoo City and Yazoo County. Before ravaging the city, the tornado damaged a chemical plant in Louisiana, causing a nitrogen leak and several injuries.

The Salvation Army is aiding relief efforts by providing hot meals, coffee, cold drinks, and spiritual counseling to tornado victims in Yazoo and Warren Counties.

The tornado occurred on the third, and most active, day of a severe weather outbreak that had previously affected areas of Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, the latter two of which were also effected during Saturday’s outbreak. The Storm Prediction Center has received 104 reports of tornadoes so far during this outbreak.

Commercial Landscape Management And Business Curb Appeal

 • Find Out More About:
 • Body Corporate Management

byAlma Abell

Curb appeal is a term often heard when selling a home or a residential property. However, curb appeal is equally important for a commercial property. Customers and consumers make a judgment on a business, campus, facility or agency based on the first impression they have of the location.

Using a commercial landscape management company to maintain the grounds of any size of commercial or industrial property is an investment in branding, reputation, and first impressions. By working with an experienced landscaping service, you have the confidence and peace of mind in knowing the first impression will be a positive one all year round.

Healthy Lawns

One of the most important aspects of business curb appeal is a healthy, lush lawn. An experienced commercial landscape managementwill be able to make recommendations as to the type of grass for new lawns or when upgrading an existing lawn. Additionally, proper irrigation, fertilization, and weed control further contribute to a beautiful natural space.

Strategically Placed and Maintained Trees

Landscaping does not require the addition of gardens and flower beds throughout the property. In fact, strategically selected and planted trees and shrubs can create an amazing look with very limited care and maintenance required.

Talking to the landscape designers will ensure the look you require will be just what is provided. They can also work with your budget both for original landscaping as well as ongoing maintenance.

Perennial and Annual Plants

By choosing annual or perennial plants as well as trees and shrubs suited to your geographic area, the cost of maintaining a beautiful outdoor space can be very reasonable.

By choosing the correct grass variety, trees, shrubs, and plants to complement the business, companies can boost the curb appeal of their commercial or industrial space without spending a fortune.

Irish CAO releases 2005 university offers to students

Monday, August 22, 2005

The Central Applications Office in Ireland has released the first round of offers for places on third level courses to over 60,000 Irish Leaving Certificate students (graduating secondary school students).

The offers are given out based on a highly competitive points system whereby students receive from

 • 100 points for an A1 to 45 points for a D3 at higher level.
 • 60 points for an A1 to 5 points for a D3 on lower level.

Points from a student’s best six subjects are added up to make his or her total points. This year 145 students achieved the maximum 600 points. Students achieveing this are generally regarded as the top students academically in the country.

Points required for courses in medicine and nursing have risen again leaving many candidates disappointed. Due to the huge popularity of medicine and the low supply of courses, points for entry into medicine are in the region of 580 points. Points for arts, engineering and commerce have fallen marginally.

While the points system is often attacked for placing too much pressure on students, it has avoided the problem of grade inflation that has occurred in the UK and USA. The Leaving Certificate exam has remained largely unchanged since its inception in 1924. It is often joked that the same questions reappear on the papers every 30 or 40 years.

“Unauthorized” Tom Cruise bio hits number one on Amazon.com, New York Times best sellers list

Friday, January 25, 2008

Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography, a biography of actor Tom Cruise written by journalist Andrew Morton, has hit the number one spot on Amazon.com‘s Top Sellers list and The New York Times Best Sellers list.

Morton’s book was published January 15, and hit number one on Amazon.com’s Top Sellers list on January 18. Yesterday, the book hit the number one spot on The New York Times Best Sellers list. The book is not for sale in Britain or Ireland, and the New York Post has reported that British tourists to the United States are buying copies of the book to bring back home.

Morton makes some controversial assertions in the book, including that Cruise is second in command at the Church of Scientology, and that Scientology was the cause of Cruise and Nicole Kidman‘s separation.

Cruise’s attorney, Bertram Fields released a statement which said that the book was “absolutely loaded with false statements.” Cruise has threatened a USD$100 million lawsuit against Morton and the book’s publisher, St. Martin’s Press. The Church of Scientology also responded to Morton’s claims in the book. In a 15-page statement, the Church called the book “bigoted” and a “defamatory assault,” and said that Cruise “holds no official or unofficial position in the Church hierarchy.”

Morton was interviewed by the Associated Press, and responded to some of the statements made by the Church of Scientology. When asked if he had attempted to interview Cruise for the book, Morton said “I asked Tom for an interview and he declined.” In response to a statement released by Cruise’s publicists that he had not interviewed “one person who has known or worked with Tom” in the past twenty-five years, Morton responded “I interviewed everyone from scriptwriters to producers to actors to actresses to teachers to girlfriends to pupils to Scientologists to people who have audited him.” When questioned about his assertion that Cruise is “second in command” of the Church of Scientology, Morton stated “Scientology would be a shadow of what it is today if it had not been for the involvement of Tom Cruise.”

Mr. Morton, apparently unfazed by the reputation of the group’s notoriously hair-triggered legal department, leaves few stones unhurled.

Janet Maslin of The New York Times wrote that parts of the book “push the limits of responsible reporting.” A review in the Chicago Tribune was also critical, and Teresa Budasi wrote “If you read Andrew Morton’s unauthorized biography of Tom Cruise with a fan’s curiosity in one hand and a thinking person’s skepticism in the other, you’ll likely end up in the same place you were before you read it: not all that interested.” In his review of the book, Dave Shiflett of The Wall Street Journal commented on the litigious nature of the Church of Scientology, writing “Mr. Morton, apparently unfazed by the reputation of the group’s notoriously hair-triggered legal department, leaves few stones unhurled.”

Shortly before the book’s publication, a video produced by the Church of Scientology featuring Tom Cruise promoting his beliefs appeared on the Internet. After the Church of Scientology sent a legal complaint to the online video-sharing website YouTube, the video was taken down from that site, but is available on Gawker.com. A group of Internet users calling themselves “Anonymous” subsequently announced a “War on Scientology” including denial-of-service attacks against the Church of Scientology’s main websites. Andreas Heldal-Lund, founder of the Scientology-critical site and Norway-based non-profit organization Operation Clambake released a statement on Tuesday critical of the actions of the “Anonymous” group, saying that the Church of Scientology deserves the right to freedom of speech.

People lose sight of the fact that Tom Cruise is actually a person. I feel for him.

Actor Jerry O’Connell, who had previously acted alongside Cruise in the 1996 film Jerry Maguire, produced a parody of the Cruise video which was released on Wednesday. Other Hollywood acquaintances of Cruise, including comedians Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller, released statements defending Cruise and criticizing those who have mocked him for his beliefs. Sandler stated “To see anyone’s private life invaded and mocked like this is sickening,” and Stiller commented “People lose sight of the fact that Tom Cruise is actually a person. I feel for him.”

On Wednesday the Associated Press reported that Cruise will be a presenter at the Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony on Sunday.

2012 Report on Gender Equality and Development says US women have room for progress

Friday, September 27, 2013

Tuesday, World Bank released the 2012 World Development Report on Gender Equality and Development. The United States is referred to many times, often as a benchmark to foster understanding of recent gains for women in other parts of the globe. At the same time, United States women still lag behind US men in a number of areas.

In 2012, the authors note women in the United States still face challenges economically and socially. They are represented disproportionately in certain professions like teaching and nursing. They are paid less than their male counterparts. Jobs traditionally held by women also result in lower wages for men who hold these jobs. They are under-represented at the highest level of business, with only 28 of Fortune 1000 companies having a female chief executive officer. The bottom 20% of women economically have a slightly higher birth rate than their peers in the top 20%.

Immigrants to the United States from Southeast Asia and India have higher than expected male to female birth ratios, which the report authors suggest is partially deliberate sex selection based on cultural attitudes from home countries. In 2009, over half a million US women were victims of intimate partner violence. The report suggests US men have greater pension assets than US women. When compared to elderly US men, elderly women in the United States are more likely to live alone than with a spouse. US women are disproportionately under-represented in local police forces, accounting for less than 20% of all police officers. Women in the United States also bear a higher percentage of housework duties than men at 61%. When US women take part time work while raising children, they find it difficult to use that work experience to gain future full time employment. US women are disincentivized from re-entering the workforce after giving birth because of the high cost of childcare.

Many of the gains for United States women took place a while ago and took a long time to get. It took 40 years, 1870–1910, to see major improvements in the percentage of girls aged 6 to 12 attending school. In 1921, after women got the right to vote in the United States, the United States Congress passed the Promotion of the Welfare and Hygiene of Maternity and Infancy Act. This assisted in lowering infant mortality from 23% to 15%.

The report says affirmative action in the United States resulted in jobs transferring from men to women, but the authors hedged and did not draw a conclusion about the economic impact of these legislative efforts other than to say the impact was not negative.

Many of the legislative victories for United States women came early compared to developing countries. Property rights for women, while later than some of their European counterparts like Norway and the United Kingdom, started to come by 1848. That year, the Married Women’s Property Act was passed in New York. It was the first legislation of its kind in the country. Other states soon followed. Women got suffrage on a state-by-state level in the country until they got federal suffrage in 1920. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 barred discrimination against women and allowed married women to make loans without their husband’s consent. In 1980, airlines were barred from discriminating against flight attendances for their marital status during the hiring and firing stage.

The number of United States respondents agreeing with the proposition “a university education is more important for a boy than for a girl” decreased from about 14% in the period between 1994 and 1999 to about about 9% in the period between 2005 and 2007. Similarly, the number of people who agreed with “when jobs are scarce, men should have more right to a job than women” decreased from 19% to about 8% over the same period.

The report cites current research from the United States and England showing the more education a mother has, the better the outcomes for her children will be.

Currently in the United States, females academically outperform their male counterparts in all academic areas including [[mathematics|math] and science. On the Programme for International Student Assessment math test though, US boys tested better than US girls by a score of roughly 495 to 480. US girls outperform boys on the literacy test with mean scores of approximately 510 to 490. In this regard, the report suggests US girls’ performance patterns resemble global ones.

Mali’s percentage of girls in primary school is equivalent to the United States in 1810 at around 34%. Burkino Faso is worse, matching the United States in 1780 with a percentage of roughly 25%. Niger’s current enrollment for girls is around 50%, around the same percentage as the United States in 1900.

The Foundation Of Medical Training Medical Training Supplies

 • Find Out More About:
 • Phlebotomy Training Programs Van Nuys Ca

If you are considering going into the medical industry or ifyou are already involved then you are sure to know the value that medicaltraining supplies hold. Buy purchasing the supplies you enable yourself totrain for real life medical emergencies.Medical training supplies can be anything from a piece of gauze tobigger electronic equipment, such as defibrillators, used by paramedics anddoctors. Spending time on the machines will enable you to become accustomed tothe interface and procedures so that you can confidently use the machine when areal emergency comes up.

What exactly will you need as medical training supplies? Theanswer to this question will differ depending on which medical field you wouldlike to enter. For instance, if you wishto become accredited in first aid then you will need the more basic medicalsupplies. You will need gauze, bandagesand of course a CPR dummy. Learning CPRwill be your biggest challenge, but by using a CPR dummy you will be able toquickly master this skill. Once mastered, you will need to be able to react to different age and physiological aspects ofthe patient or person in need. Forinstance, when doing CPR the force and amount of air you supply will differ ona baby and a full grown adult. With training comes experience and of course thelonger you stick at it the better you will become.

If you plan to become a physiotherapist then you will needto invest in ultrasound and even infra red laser equipment. Learning how to use the equipment is essentialto providing quality care to your patients. In fact if you make a mistake thenyou could be harming the patient instead of helping them. Even professionals need to refresh their trainingand this is often due to the fact new medical equipment is coming out all thetime. If the person doesnt know how tooperate the medical equipment correctly, then accidents and even loss of lifecan occur. Perhaps now it becomes moreevident just how important medical training supplies are. Without these supplies medical training wouldnot be possible or nearly as effective.

Another group of medical personnel who greatly relies on medical training suppliesis paramedics.Paramedics are normally the first on a scene and they need to doeverything in their power to stabilise a persons life. They need to be ableconfidently assess and diagnose a patients injuries and then take propertreatment steps. This will includefastening braces, using defibrillators, setting up IVs and bandagingwounds. All their skills are honedthrough training and by using medical training supplies. In actual fact withoutthese supplies our medical training standards will fall dramatically. Just imaginea medical practitioner arriving on the scene of an accident without ever beenable to practice his techniques and using his equipment. There is no substitute for experience and thishas never been more so than in the medical industry.

Sulpicio Lines pay PHP6.2 million for death of man in 1998 ferry disaster

Thursday, July 3, 2008

Sulpicio Lines, a ferry company in the Philippines, have been ordered to pay PH?6.24 million over the death of a man on board MV Princess of the Orient, which sank in stormy weather off Batangas in 1998. Ernesto Unabia was one of seventy confirmed fatalities in the disaster, which left eighty more missing.

Unabia was a 37-year-old seaman who worked on international vessels, and earned a ?120,000 salary. According to widow Verna Unabia, who filed the case with her three children, he was going to work on for thirteen more years and then retire. Unabia’s case is the first to be concluded, although most victims settled with Sulpicio without claims being filed.

Although Sulpicio lost their appeal several weeks ago, reporters have only today received access to documentation concerning the case.

Under Philippines law, employers are responsible for their employees actions. However, in Pestaño vs. Sumayang the Supreme court ruled that if it could be proved an employer had taken appropriate diligence when selecting employers then they could not be held responsible.

It was viewed that Sulpicio was responsible as they failed to remove captain Esrum Mahilum from the vessel despite a number of incidents involving the ferry while he was in command of it. Princess of the Orient had struck the bottom of Manila‘s North Harbour, sideswiped a container ship and suffered a crippling engine fire while berthed at North Harbour, being towed first to Cebu and ultimately Singapore for repairs.

Despite these serious incidents while the ship was under Mahilum’s care, however, he was not removed from captaincy or even disciplined. A Board of Marine Inquiry (BMI) investigation into the ultimate sinking of the Princess of the Orient would later say that Sulpicio did not have enough initiative to take action against him. The court ruled this made them responsible for his actions.

On September 18, 1998, the day of the sinking, Captain Mahilum was warned before starting out that severe weather was approaching. He wrongly calculated that the storm was safely distanced and left port regardless, running into the storm two hours later. Princess of the Orient began listing to the left and a distress call was sent, but she sank before help arrived. The BMI’s report blamed the disaster on the captain making “erroneous maneuvers of the vessel before it sank.” He remains missing to this day.

After the court ruled that this made Sulpicio liable to pay civil damages an appeal was filed, in which Sulpicio said that the captain “valiantly tried to save his ship up to the bitter end. He heroically went down with his ship.” Although he failed to properly supervise the abandon ship order he gave, he was last seen helping passengers to board life rafts. Sulpicio further alleged that careful analysis of the BMI report showed he did not directly cause the disaster.

The court rejected the appeal, with judge Estella Alma Singco saying that while the failure to remove the captain wasn’t the direct cause, “such failure doubtless contributed materially to the loss of life.” Sulpicio were ordered to pay P6.240 million in lost earnings, P100,000 moral damages, P50,000 indemnity – which Sulpicio had already offered to all the families of the deceased – and P50,000 in pursuer’s litigation costs.
