Studies find radioactive material at Israel bomb site in Lebanon

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

Studies carried out by researchers near the village of Khiam found radio active material at the site of bombing by Israel during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict. The UN says that it has found no evidence of urianum-based munitions.

Two previously unknown Lebanese professors of physics, Mohammad Ali Kubaissi and Ibrahim Rachidi claim that the levels of radiation, about 700 nanosieverts per hour, twenty times the average levels, are consistent with the use of a depleted uranium bomb casing. Military use of depleted uranium is quite controversial due to its toxicity and low level radioactivity. Depleted uranium features in the list of weapons capable of causing mass destruction, superflous injury and unnecessary suffering, passed by the Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities of the UNHRC in 1996 and 1997.

This analysis has been partially coroborated by an independent consultant specialising in career, organisation and community psychology issues, Dai Williams, affiliated with the environmentalist organisation Green Audit, with testing done by Chris Busby, a member of the Defence Depleted Uranium Oversight Board of the British Ministry of Defence and a director and co-founder of Green Audit. Williams believes that these anomalies may have been caused by Israel’s use of uranium based weapons involving some secret physical techniques, not nuclear fission; however, there are no known such physical processes.

The U.S. is currently the only nation known to use depleted uranium bomb casings and munitions. Some observers have claimed that Israel used depleted uranium muntions during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war; however, U.N. observers have never found Israel using depleted uranium.

This level of radiation is also consistent with Israel having destroyed some form of storage facility for nuclear material. Such facilities are speculated to exist in the Middle East, often controlled by Islamic extremist groups who (allegedly) hope to construct a dirty bomb.

Dirty bombs are not considered to be as effective militarily as merely using more explosives. Post September 11th news reports about the dangers of dirty bombs have been criticized as fear mongering for fallaciously assuming years of continued exposure by victims without acounting for clean up procedures, or even rain fall.

Usps Address Validation Puts A Stamp Of Approval On Outgoing Mailing Addresses

 • Find Out More About:
 • Christmas Scrubs Australia

byphineasgray

There are many standards of operation set in place by the USPS and they are all intended to ease the process and guarantee successful delivery of all mail and packages for residences and businesses. The USPS utilizes a strategic system of validation for all mail that comes through their stations. The system is trained to recognize valid and invalid mail codes or addresses. In any case that an incorrect or improper address has been labeled on outgoing mail, there will be a delay or possible failure in delivering that particular piece or batch of mail. This may be a simple mistake to correct for residential mailings, as the mail can easily be returned to sender. Businesses that implement mass mailing efforts of any kind may not be so fortunate if this happens to any of their outgoing mail types.

Technical Standards

There are a few common core standards to be assessed when mailing pieces or packages that ensure mail is properly delivered. The USPS recognizes a CASS certified approach before an address is recognized as valid or deliverable. This system makes any corrections necessary to the address when possible, to include, missing Zip code digits, complete address amendments and other oversights. Proper addresses must include US Postal service standard city, state and zips in order to be considered valid. These technical standards make the mailing cycle much simpler for the mailer as well as the postal service.

Basic Knowledge

There are many cases where an individual’s basic knowledge of a certain location can lead to costly errors. United States validation methods adhere to uniform names of cities and not nicknames or alias. This is often a short coming in mailing pieces or packages to destinations and can prevent mail from being properly accepted or processes. Zip codes are a part of a unique management system that specifies each zip code to one particular city name. Software that is CASS certified helps to differentiate the difference in what is acceptable and what is not by the Postal Service. Another common piece of knowledge is that all addresses must be complete in order to process the delivery of any mail or package. Again, certified CASS software is designed to meet the standards of the USPS Address Validation protocol. Basic knowledge is good to have but validation of addresses is what makes the difference in successful or failed delivery.

USPS Address Validation is an important part of the mailing process. Anchor Computer Software knows the importance of accuracy in mailing addresses.

US military developing non-lethal pain weapon

Saturday, March 5, 2005The US military is funding the research and development of a weapon that could be used to inflict excruciating pain from up to 2 kilometres away, but is meant to otherwise leave victims unharmed. Pain researchers have been left furious after work aimed at controlling pain has been used to develop technology aimed at maximising it.

Intended for use against protesters and rioters, the research focuses on the effect electromagnetic pulses can have on pain reception. Due to be ready by 2007, the Pulsed Energy Projectile (PEP) weapon will fire a burst of electrically charged gas, or plasma, which will generate an electromagnetic pulse on impact. It is this pulse which will trigger impulses in nerve cells causing extreme pain.

A review of the non-lethal weapon by the US Naval Studies Board in 2003 concluded that PEPs produced “pain and temporary paralysis” in animal test subjects. Studies ongoing at the University of Central Florida in Orlando aim at optimising this effect. The ultimate aim is to generate a pulse which will trigger optimum pain in the subject without damaging tissues. Studies due to be carried out on lab grown cells aim at identifying the threshold of pain that can be inflicted on someone without causing death. There is some concern that the studies will fall short of demonstrating a safe level for a plasma burst.

The work came to light after documents were released under the US’s Freedom of Information Act to the Sunshine Project, an organisation who aims to expose biological weapons research. One document entitled “Sensory consequences of electromagnetic pulses emitted by laser induced plasmas” concerned the generation and firing of PEPs. Pain researchers have condemned the research, claiming that it could be put to use as a means of torture and that it is unethical.

“I am deeply concerned about the ethical aspects of this research,” said Andrew Rice, a consultant in pain medicine at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. “Even if the use of temporary pain can be justified as a restraining measure, which I do not believe it can, the long-term physical and psychological effects are unknown.”

Clinical psychologist at University College London, Amanda Williams expressed concern that victims risk long term harm. “Persistent pain can result in a range supposedly non-destructive stimuli which nevertheless change the functioning of the nervous system,” she says. Studies “cannot tell us about the pain and psychological consequences of such painful experience,” she said.

Wikinews Interview: Experts in IT industry comment about security of WiMAX

Monday, May 5, 2008

Computers and technology make our modern lifestyle more convenient, but they also create new risks like computer viruses and hacking. Many people want to enjoy the convenience of new technology, but they may not be aware of its problems.

WiMAX is being promoted in Taiwan by the Taipei Computer Association, the Industrial Technology Research Institute and the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China. It is considered by some to be the communication standard for the next generation of mobile devices.

Information security companies are concerned increasingly by Internet crime, and some of them question the security of WiMAX. After all, everyone wants to welcome this new technology but is afraid of its potential to cause security issues.

Some companies have analyzed potential security issues which threaten the success of WiMAX. But what have they found?

Taking the opportunity of two press conferences in Taiwan, Wikinews Journalist Rico Shen briefly interviewed both Hsiao-wen Hung, President of Microsoft Research Asia and Li Chang, Deputy Secretary General of Taipei Computer Association. With their experience in the IT industry, they agreed to comment on this question.

Ways On How To Completely Relax On Weekends

 • Find Out More About:
 • Lego Technic For Sale Australia

Submitted by: William U. Steinmetz

After working for five days, any person will be truly exhausted. Weekends offer a chance for you to rejuvenate yourself physically and mentally. There are lots of activities that you can do during weekends. If you specifically want to relax, here are some tips that you should keep in mind:

Prepare breakfast for yourself. If you do not wish to have the effort, you can ask someone to make it for you. Just make sure that you don t end up buying fast food breakfast meals. The most important thing in this activity is for you to be able to eat your food slowly and without the rush. When it is a workday, a lot of people tend to skip their breakfast. There are also some people who may be able to eat breakfast but aren t able to savor the food that is present in front of them.

Meals that remind you of homemade breakfast from home or from your favorite coffee shop can be best to have. Eat a variety of foods so that you can enjoy a different flavor with every spoonful that you take.

Waking up early and eating breakfast can be better than catching up on sleep and waking up in the afternoon. Even if you have slept late on a Friday night, avoid waking up very late the day after. As long as you have gotten at least 4 to 6 hours of sleep, that can be enough. In addition, you have the chance to take a nap on the afternoon.

Take your time inside the shower or in the bathtub. You can make your body and mind relax. You can also free yourself of all the stresses which you have gathered throughout the workweek. Use aromatic soaps or shampoos to get you in the mood even more. There are tons of scents that you can choose from. And a lot of these scents are specifically used in order to help a person relax.

After taking a bath, wear comfortable clothes. If you aren t going to get out of the house, you can wear pajamas. If you have to be somewhere, make sure that you wear comfortable clothes. Your work clothes may be too formal for you to feel comfortable in. Wearing casual clothing on a weekend helps you feel refreshed.

This can be the best time to catch up on episodes of your favorite TV shows. Or, your weekends can be spent catching up with the happenings in the lives of your friends. Do whatever it is that you think makes you very happy. Sometimes, listening to music and doing nothing else can help you relax and free your mind of any form of worries. Even the most mundane tasks can feel special if you love what you are doing.

Be sure to give importance to every minute that you have. You can go to sleep or watch TV. As long as you think that these activities are helpful to you, you can continue doing them.

ACLU President Strossen on religion, drugs, guns and impeaching George Bush

Tuesday, October 30, 2007File:Nadine Strossen 5 by David Shankbone.jpg

There are few organizations in the United States that elicit a stronger emotional response than the American Civil Liberties Union, whose stated goal is “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States”. Those people include gays, Nazis, women seeking abortion, gun owners, SPAM mailers and drug users. People who are often not popular with various segments of the public. The ACLU’s philosophy is not that it agrees or disagrees with any of these people and the choices that they make, but that they have personal liberties that must not be trampled upon.

In Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with the President of the ACLU, Nadine Strossen, he wanted to cover some basic ground on the ACLU’s beliefs. Perhaps the area where they are most misunderstood or have their beliefs most misrepresented is their feelings about religion in the public sphere. The ACLU categorically does not want to see religion disappear from schools or in the public forum; but they do not want to see government advocacy of any particular religion. Thus, former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore’s placement of a ten ton monument to the Ten Commandments outside the courthouse is strenuously opposed; but “Lone Ranger of the Manger” Rita Warren’s placement of nativity scenes in public parks is vigorously defended. In the interview, Strossen talks about how certain politicians and televangelists purposefully misstate the law and the ACLU’s work in order to raise funds for their campaigns.

David Shankbone’s discussion with Strossen touches upon many of the ACLU’s hot button issues: religion, Second Amendment rights, drug liberalization, “partial-birth abortion” and whether or not George W. Bush should be impeached. It may surprise the reader that many ideas people have about the most visible of America’s civil libertarian organizations are not factually correct and that the ACLU often works closely with many of the organizations people think despise its existence.

Want An Annual Or Perennial Plant, Check Out Water (Aquatic) Plants

 • Find Out More About:
 • Smart Irrigation

Submitted by: John Hoffman

Water (aquatic) plants are plants that have adapted to living in aquatic environments. They are also referred to as aquatic macrophytes. A macrophyte is an aquatic plant that grows in or near water and is either emergent, submergent, or floating. In lakes macrophytes provide cover for fish and substrate for aquatic invertebrates, produce oxygen, and provides food for some fish and wildlife.

Aquatic plants are unique because they require special adaptations for living submerged in water, or at the water’s surface. These plants can only grow in water or in soil that is permanently saturated with water. Aquatic vascular plants have vascular tissues, which circulate resources through the plant. This feature allows vascular plants to develop to a larger size than non-vascular plants, which lack these specialized conducting tissues and are therefore restricted to relatively small sizes. Seaweeds are not vascular plants; rather they are multicellular marine algae, and therefore are not typically included among aquatic plants. This type of plant does not have a problem retaining water, due to the abundance of water in their environment. This means there is less need to regulate transpiration, a process similar to evaporation, which would require more energy and be of little benefit to the plant.

Aquatic plants have certain distinguishing characteristics, such as:

1. A thin cuticle. Thick cuticles reduce water loss, thus aquatics have no need for thick cuticles.

2. Stomata that are open most of the time due to the abundance of water and there is no need for it to retain in the plant.

3. An increased number of stomata, which can be on either side of the leaves.

4. A less rigid structure, water pressure supports them.

5. Air sacs for flotation

6. Flat leaves on surface plants for flotation.

7. Small roots because the water can diffuse directly into the leaves. Large root systems are not required for water intake.

Many species of aquatic plant are invasive species. Aquatic plants make particularly good weeds because they reproduce vegetatively from fragments.

We all are very familiar with the water hyacinth, a free-floating perennial plant native to tropical and sub-tropical South America. The hyacinth has broad, thick, glossy, ovate leaves, and may rise above the surface of the water as much as 1 meter high.

It is one of the fastest growing plants known, reproducing primarily by way of runners which eventually form daughter plants. Also, large quantities of seeds are produced and they are viable up to 30 years. The common water hyacinth are aggressive growers known to double their population in 2 weeks.

A bit of trivia for your next game:

In Southern Pakistan they are the provincial flower of Sindh.

In the Philippines, enterprising individuals use some of the water hyacinth’s stems and dry it to take its fibers and take them to form strands of string. This string is woven or interlinked together to form a hemp used for making bags, footwear, wreaths, hats, vases, Christmas lanterns and other decorative items. Since the water lily is in abundance, a nuisance to some, lets individuals earn money by selling these items and indirectly aids in cleaning up the overpopulated bodies of water that are full of water hyacinths.
